The Overview And Character Profiles
OVERVIEW
The world of Shangri-la--a chaotic land where man and demon, science and magic, had once coexisted peacefully. The natural order which governed this tranquil land decayed unexpectedly. The chief cause of this sudden upheaval, it was believed, were the attempts to revive the fierce demon, Lord Gyumaoh, who had been vanquished in battle some five hundred years ago. These experiments gave rise to a negative aura which rapidly spread across the land, affecting the demon populace, and causing them to go berserk. In an effort to bring about an end to this terrible upheaval, four youths were forced to go on a journey to the far west in India, where they would attempt to put a stop to the experiments to revive Gyumaoh, and restore the natural order of the land. The path lying before these four adventurers is not an easy one. Not only must they traverse the harsh landscape on the road to India, confronted with the constant threat of demonic attack, interference from the Heavens by those who have their own agenda in the ensuing chaos, but these four brave travelers must face the even greater danger of running out of cigarettes and keeping Goku's belly filled with food. Maybe chaos isn't such a bad thing, after all?

Profile: Said to be a great and noble priest who travels the lands with his three loyal followers, banishing demons and being the epitome of piety. Well, it just goes to show you that the legend is based a little more on fiction than fact. Genjyo Sanzo is a hard-smoking, hard-drinking, no-nonsense kind of guy who has no qualms about pulling his Banishing Gun on his friends or enemies to maintain order amongst the group, and throughout the land in which he travels. He's self-centered, conceited, and not above treating his comrades like his personal servants, as he relaxes quietly with a cup of tea and the morning paper. Sometimes it just pays to be the leader. Despite his contemptuous demeanor; Sanzo is a calm, charismatic individual, with the ability to approach even the most dangerous situations with a level head. He has lived a difficult life, with the murder of his master, and being entrusted to guard the Maten Scripture from those who seek to use its power for their own evil ambitions. Now saddled with the unwelcome responsibility of stopping the revival of Lord Gyumaoh, and setting the natural order of the world to right, it's no wonder Sanzo is a jaded and bitter kind of guy.

Profile: With an insatiable appetite that drives the rest of the Sanzo Party crazy, as well as a talent for fighting that is second to none, Son Goku is Sanzo's constant companion, and joined him on his journey to the west. Goku began life being born from a rock egg, this was said to contain the Earth's aura. Goku came into contact with Sanzo when he discovered Goku imprisoned in a stone cage on the side of a mountain, and after some 500 years of confinement, Sanzo freed him from his jail cell. Ever since that time, across several lifetimes, Goku has constantly remained at Sanzo's side, much to the constant despair of the cynical monk. Goku wears a golden coronet on his forehead in order to restrain his enormous demonic power. Should this coronet be removed, Goku goes into a fierce berserker mode, where it is said not even the power of the Heavens can stand against him. Goku's primary weapon is his Nyoibou, which can expand to an infinite length, or break apart into a jointed weapon. When not fighting, or whining about being hungry, Goku can usually be found arguing with Gojyo, who he shares a strange, but humorous antagonistic relationship with.

Profile: When Sha Gojyo pulls into town; it would be well advised to have a steady supply of wine, women, and smokes available, as he tends to go through all three of them quite quickly. Gojyo is the group's resident womanizer, card shark, and the man behind the Jakujou (the long staff-weapon with the crescent moon blade on the end, attached by a long chain). He is best friends with Hakkai, and spends many hours bickering in the back of the jeep with Goku, who he shares a very antagonistic relationship with. Despite his savvy, yet unrefined behavior, Gojyo acts like a big brother to the rest of the group, making him extremely reliable when things get rough. Gojyo is half-human/half-demon, and as such, has crimson red hair, which is considered to be a major taboo in Shangri-la. This also made him despised and disliked by his own mother, leading Gojyo to endure a very painful childhood. Fortunately, his older brother, Dokugakuji, looked out for him, and he was able to become the charming man you know today. Of course, having your older brother siding against you in support of your enemies ensures that family reunions are always eventful.
CHO HAKKAI

Profile: Amongst a group comprised of unruly young men, surely someone can keep their cool and be reasonable, right? That voice of reason would be Cho Hakkai. Soft-spoken, gentle, and polite to a fault, Hakkai works hard to make sure everyone is taken care of and tended to on their trip westward. Hakkai prefers to avoid violence, but when the situation calls for it, he can focus his ki into an energy blast, or use it to shield his comrades in battle. He is the caretaker of Hakuryuu, the little white dragon who turns into the group's mode of transportation--a jeep. Veiled deep behind his gentle exterior lies a past filled with horror. Hakkai started life as a human, but after his lover was murdered by demons, he took vengeance upon them, and with the blood of a thousand demons on his hands, he wound up becoming a demon himself. Despite everything that's happened, Hakkai is still the calmest and most collected member of the Sanzo Party, with an acute sense of observation, and an ability to think clearly that has gotten Hakkai and his colleagues out of serious and not to mention dangerous situations on numerous occasions.
KOUGAIJI'S GANG
The son of Gyuuma Ou, son of a female demon who has been trapped inside a stone wall. Although he is a nemesis for Sanzo and others, Kougaiji is not a really bad demon. He is a true friend to his followers (Yaone and Dokugakuji), and especially to his sister, Ririn. He is blinded and confused, though, by his determination to bring his mother to life.

Profile: He is a demon prince, son of Gyuuma Ou. His stepmother, Gyokumen Koushu has put his real mother into a spell and promised him to release her if he follows her orders. He has no choice but to obey her and do all the dirty work for her stepmother that includes taking away Sanzo's Sutra for Gyuuma Ou's revival. He has a half-sister Ririn whom he cares about very much. Although he is a demon with an evil intention, he has a very good heart and cares for his subordinates.
YAONE

Although she knows that their enemies were Sanzo and his company, she is still kind to them ESPECIALLY Hakkai. In fact, too kind?
Dokugakuji

Profile: One of Kougaiji's subordinate, he is Gojyo's half-brother. His real name is She Jien (whom Gojyo calls him). Good-natured and friendly, he is not totally evil but his blind devotion to Kougaiji who helped him find meaning in his life is admirable.
LIRIN
Profile: Lirin is the daughter of Gyumaoh and Gyokumen Koushu, and the younger half-sister of Kougaiji. She is like Goku (double personality-wise... especially when she is hungry and wants meat buns), and occasionally hangs out with the Sanzo party, despite the fact they're supposed to be at odds. She adores her older brother and knows her own mother does not love her, so Yaone and Kougaiji are almost more like parents to her.
